Incorporating professional skills into your teaching will help your learners develop into well-rounded physicians. As part of training, look for opportunities to teach learners how to identify, manage, and resolve conflicts that may arise in the clinical setting. A goal will be to help create an environment of support & trust with a clinical team.
Begin by helping learners identify conflict, as learners may overlook when conflict or strain enters a professional relationship. Discuss with your learner some common circumstances that may trigger conflict, such as running behind schedule, onboarding new staff, and stressful patients. Guide your learners to identify the types of high-stakes situations in a clinic in which tension or anxiety may arise, and encourage them to be sensitive to the goals and needs of other members of the clinical team. Provide your learners with concrete examples, such as a time when team members disagreed regarding how care should be delivered to a patient, and walk your learners through how that conflict was resolved.
