Use Self-Reflection to Identify Barriers to Well-Being
Over the course of a day in the clinic, learners will look to you for more than medical knowledge or more advanced experiences with patients. They will also look to you as an example of how one might maintain work-life balance, how to handle conflict amongst peers, and how to maintain their well-being throughout the course of a day, week, or season. It's important, then, that you help them identify barriers to well-being.
While it's common to have a discussion with a learner about the importance of goal-setting, you can also show the learner how to engage in targeted self-reflection, specifically in the areas of time management, tendencies to isolation, or their responses to high-stress situations. Show them how one can engage in self-reflection several times during the workday, and encourage them to connect with their colleagues in order to build important professional relationships. If a learner continues to struggle to identify barriers to their well-being, ask them to begin keeping a brief journal in order to help them identify patterns that they might otherwise overlook.
