Enhance Professional Identity Formation in a Clinical Setting
As a preceptor, strive to enhance the goals of clinical teaching by intentionally contributing to your learner’s professional identity formation. When you combine clinical experience with experiences in interprofessional collaboration, you help your learners transition from being learners into becoming fully-formed medical professionals. One way you can do this is by creating a learning environment that contributes to professional identity formation in your clinic.
Professional identity formation is largely impacted by role models and mentors, but it also depends upon both nonclinical and clinical experiences. Early exposure to patients, participation and collaboration with other team members, and learning how to work on an interprofessional team are important. Foster an awareness of well-being and resilience, daily self-reflection, and relationship building. You can do this by modeling these positive behaviors, as well as by initiating conversations with your learners that encourage them to consider how these activities not only help patients, but further their own professional identity development.
