Coach Students in Conflict Management
Amid all of the topics covered during rotations, teaching professionalism can sometimes take a back seat to teaching content through procedures, patient encounters, and other learning experiences. However, you can role model professional behavior while dealing with conflict in your clinic, and show students how to manage similar issues in their future career.
If a conflict arises in your clinic while a student is present, coach him or her as you deal with it. In private, explain to the student the context for the situation and your plan for resolving the matter. Your demeanor and poise, the way you speak, and how you engage with your team will provide a valuable model the student can use in the future when the need arises in his or her own clinic.
