A Model for Structuring Your Student’s Clerkship

During a rotation of any length, whether 4, 6, or 8 weeks, your goal is to provide your student with a progression of carefully chosen experiences in patient care. You also want to give plenty of feedback, opportunities to practice documentation, and instruction according to the student’s skill level. The Progressive Learning Model helps you map out these major milestones over the course of a student’s clerkship rotation.

The Progressive Learning Model gradually increases the student’s level of involvement and responsibility over each week of the clerkship. For example, during the first half of the clerkship, the student can focus on collecting data from patient encounters. In the second half of the clerkship, the student will focus more on independent clinical problem solving. You can read more about the Progressive Learning Model here.
