Documenting Learner Performance
Timely and systematic evaluation is an important part of learning. Developing a system for regular documentation during the clinical rotation will save you time and produce a more accurate and valuable evaluation for the learner. It’s important to be aware of the guidelines and deadlines for evaluating learners at your sponsoring institution or program.
There are several ways to save time when documenting a learner’s performance. First, take the time to record notes about their performance on a daily or weekly basis as a means of maintaining an accurate overall view of a learner’s progress. Second, find out if the sponsoring institution has any evaluation forms for daily observations and final evaluations. Lastly, take the time to write down qualitative comments that specifically describe a learner’s performance. Learners have reported that these comments are more useful than Likert scale ratings.
